Email Client Configuration

 

All email clients require the same basic input to send and receive email.  You will need to know:

  1. Your username and password for  your ISP  (You may have more than one mailbox/ username.)
  2. E-mail address: username@ISPname.net (com or edu)   (smith@comcast.com)
  3. Incoming mail server name: mail.ISPname.net (com or edu)
  4. Outgoing mail server name: smtp*.ISPname.net (com or edu)  (*this varies)
  5. Your ISP's email type:  POP or IMAP   Hosting Provider List
  6. Your ISP's  incoming and outgoing mailserver name.  Mail Server List

Below are examples of email configurations for

  1. Microsoft Outlook Express and Entourage
  2. Netscape and Mozilla.

NOTE:  The San Mateo Community College incoming & outgoing mail server is: mail.smccd.edu

 

 

Outlook Express and Entourage Browser Configuration

 

1.  Open your Outlook Express or Entourage program.

Select - Tools - Accounts

Each user can have more than one account.

More than one user can create accounts.

Select - New Account

Select: New

 (A "wizard window" will open.)

Enter - your name

 (This series of "wizard" windows will assist you.)

Enter - your email address

e.g.   smithj@pacbell.net

SELECT IMAP  for SMCCD mail or
     POP   for other Internet Service Providers

Enter your ISPs email server type.
Hosting Provider List

Enter your ISPs  incoming and outgoing mail server name.  Mail Server List

incoming server is, for example:

  • mail.smccd.net
  • mail.comcast.net
  • mail.earthlink.net

outgoing server is

  • mail.smccd.net
  • smtp.comcast.net
  • mail.earthlink.net

NOTE: The "outgoing"server must match the network location you are using.  For example, if you want to pick up your Comcast email on campus, set your incoming server to mail.comcast.net and your outgoing server to mail.smccd.net.

(You cannot configure Outlook Express to receive AOL mail.)

Enter - your account name

Enter - password

Check "save password" iIf you do not share your computer.

Enter - an account name that will distinguish these settings from all other settings you may use. (Any name you choose.)

 

Example:

John Smith SMCCD
John Smith Comcast
John Smith Earthlink

 

 

 

Edit Configuration

 

To edit an existing account

Select - Tools - Account - Edit

Configuring Netscape and Mozilla Email Programs

 

1  Open the Email Program

Open Netscape by clicking on its icon in the start menu. (bottom left corner of screen)

Select "Window":  "Mail & Newsgroups"

If this email client has never been configured, a dialog box will prompt you for your information

2  Preferences

If a dialog box does not automatically open, selct Netscape Preferences from the finder menu.

Select - Netscape - Preferences
(from the menu at the top of your screen)

3...Identity

Select - Mail & Newsgroups (Mac - Click on the arrow) (PC - Click on the "+")

Select - Identity from the expanded list below it.

Your name:...........(for example - John Smith)
Email address: ..   (for example - smithj@comcast.net)

Netscape Identity

 ..

 

4... Mail Servers

Select - Mail Servers from the expanded list

Enter:

incoming server is (for example)

  • postoffice.pacbell.net
  • mail.comcast.net
  • mail.earthlink.net

outgoing server is  (for example)

  • mail.pacbell.net (use ISP account name)
  • mail.comcast.net
  • mail.earthlink.net

SELECT -  IMAP  for SMCCD mail or
                    POP   for other Internet Service Providers

Server Information

 

4   Email Account Username

Select - POP (if you are using a POP server.) Otherwise, select IMAP

Enter - username: use the account name given to you by your ISP (Internet Service Provider)

Netscape Name

Netscape Account Name

Enter a name for this account (to distinguish it from other email accounts that you may wish to add to this email client.)
