Skills, Requirements, Software and Resources

Skill Prerequisites

Before participating in any course online, you should be comfortable performing the following tasks with your computer:

  1. Open, close and find files on the computer's desktop,
  2. Access the Internet and use a web browser.  (See WebReady - Lessons 1)
  3. Create and edit documents in a word processing program such as Microsoft Word.
  4. Copy and paste text from one document to another.
  5. Receive and send email with attachments.  (See WebReady - Lessons 3 & 4) 
  6. Download and open attached and compressed files.  (See WebReady - Lessons 4 & 5)
  7. Open and read a PDF file with Adobe Acrobat Reader.  (See WebReady - Lesson 6)

Requirements

Participating in your course online using SMCCD
WebAccess, you must have:
  1. An e-mail address.   (See WebReady - Email Accounts)
  2. Access to a computer with an internet connection. (See WebReady - Orientation - Handling Technical and Access Barriers)
  3. A supported web browser: 
    PC/Windows - Internet Explorer or Firefox
    Mac OSX - Firefox  (Safari doesn't work well at this time.)

    AOL Users should install the FireFox browser.  Then, after logging into AOL, open the FireFox browser application and access SMCCD Online through the FireFox browser. 

    Important! 
    Make sure Java, JavaScript and Cookies are enabled in your browser preferences. Disable all pop-up blockers. SMCCD Online uses pop-up windows to display resource materials.

Software & Resources

Download FireFox for Mac or PC
The FireFox web browser is recommended for use with
SMCCD WebAccess. Click "Macintosh downloadable software" or "Windows downloadable software" and scroll down to FireFox to download it to your computer.

Download Adobe Reader
Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) files are commonly used for exchanging documents on the web. D
ownload Adobe Reader webpage at the Adobe website: http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html


Internet Skills Resource / Course

If addition to the above, you will need a wordprocessor (like MS Word) and decompression software to unzip files. Check to see if your operating system already has this software included, if not
WebReady  (Lesson 5)  can help you find compression/decompression software.
