Good Practices

Based on current learning studies, "Good Practices" have been developed by state funded organizations.  Before creating a website, it is important to understand what "Good Practices" entail.

Based on current learning studies, "Good Practices" are being developed by state funded organizations and promoted by the CVC (California Virtual Campus created by the State Chancellor's Office)

Benefits of Learning in the Web Environment

Better access to course materials and resources, better conservation of natural resources, better student interaction, better student-instructor exchanges are just some of the reasons that instructors are moving course activities to the Web.

Just a few of the benefits:

  • improved student access to course materials
  • conservation of natural resources (gas, classroom space, paper)
  • online "anytime" conferencing (student interaction)
  • extensive Internet resources (contextualization)
  • flexible study hours
  • rapid responses (exchanges)

Just a few of the problems:

  • disability-related access issues with page or learning management system design
  • authenticating student work / proctoring tests
  • student retention / failure to bond to the online learning community
  • the diminishing, but still present digital divide

Planning, Developing and Managing Activities on the Web

  • research similar web courses (within your college, region, and with publishers)

  • select learning activities you want to move to the Web (discussion, research, assignment and handout posting, grade reports, etc.)

  • decide which web editor, course management or learning management system to use (Dreamweaver, HomePage, WebCT)

  • do a pilot lesson to determine the amount of time you will need (Multiply the time needed to create the pilot (first) lesson by the total number of lessons.)

  • create a system for managing incoming email, posting and receiving assignments and other activities
